Coping with Information Overload and the Attention Economy

05:00 PM at Sector67 (Length: 1hr)

Starting in the 1970s, well before the rise of the Internet, people have been aware of information overload, or the difficulties that increased information creates for people who are trying to complete tasks.  With more and more information available, people can only focus on a subset of the available information, but there is often a residual anxiety that some relevant information has not been considered.  The Internet, especially email and social media, have compounded the problems by not only vastly increasing the information at hand but also bringing it right into your field of vision and trying to grab your attention.  This is especially true of free services that are paid for with your attention.

Research has showed that humans are not good performing tasks requiring deep thought when they are frequently interrupted.  But fortunately this same research suggests a number of techniques that can be used to decrease these negative outcomes.  These include managing your environment to adjust the levels interruption so that they are compatible with the tasks at hand; including movement and regular breaks in your workday; and altering your levels of arousal.
