Green Computing

04:00 PM at Sector67 (Length: 1hr)

Our electronic devices allow us to do more in less time. But what is the impact of those devices on the environment.  In this session we will consider two types of environmental impact energy use and toxic waste.

Energy consumption: The good news is that consumer electronics manufacturers are paying at least some attention to energy efficiency.  On the other hand, some devices are increasing their energy consumption as their capacity increases and the power that is used when devices are “off” remains problematic.  Tips for reducing your carbon footprint will also be included.

Recycling: Many people are not aware of the toxic elements of electronic waste (ewaste).  Much of this toxic waste is shipped overseas.  Fortunately a program for responsible recycling of ewaste has been passed in Wisconsin and escaped elimination in the current State budget debates. This part of the session will focus on what can be recycled (lots) and the rules are for participating in this program.
