High Speed Networks: Opportunities for Nonprofit and Public Access Use
Opportunities for Nonprofits and Public Access Labs Using Very High Speed Networks
01:00 PM at Sector67 (Length: 1hr)
The availability of affordable very high speed internet (faster than DSL) has opened up new possibilities for nonprofits. Many of the applications replace higher cost services with more flexible versions of the same services. Online backup is one such service. Telephone service using Internet connections has the potential of this kind of decreased costs and increased flexibility.
Another group of applications uses very high speed networks to enable services that would not have been possible, at least for a whole lab of students before. Video instruction for homework clubs such as the Khan Academy (http://www.khanacademy.org/) is an example of this application with 2,400 short videos covering everything from arithmetic to physics, finance, and history. Face to face Video conferencing is another application that traveling parents have used for years but which can be now used in the workplace and enhanced with high speed connections.
